Daily Digest: Monday 13th May
USA
US equities sent mixed signals to investors through Monday, the Nasdaq 100 extended its winning streak while the Dow and S&P 500 closed lower. The Nasdaq 100 ($NDX) rose 37.43 points (0.21%) to 18,198.61 as the index closes in on its 52-week highs. The S&P 500 ($SPX) traded within tight margins falling 1.26 points (0.02%) to 5,221.42 while the Dow ($INDU) slipped slightly further falling 81.33 points (0.21%) to 39,431.51.
Europe
The UK’s FTSE 100 (FTSE) ended a six session winning streak as traders saw an 18.77 point sell-off with prices falling 0.22% to 8,414.99. Wider European equity performances followed a similar trend with the German Dax (€GDAXI) falling 30.63 points (0.16%) to 18,742.22 while the French CAC (€FCHI) fell 9.86 points (0.12%) to 8,209.28. The Pan-European STOXX 600 (€SXXP) managed to slightly outperform the market rising 0.1 points (0.019%) to 520.86.
Rest of the World
The Nikkei 225 (¥N225) has remained turbulent into a new week as investors experienced a 49.65 point (0.13%) sell-off as the index fell to 38,179.46. The key technical areas during the session were resistance at 38,723 and a tested support some 444 points lower, at 38,279. This support level was last tested on May 2nd with today’s movements mimicking a similar rebound as prices pushed to a higher close.
The Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index (¥SSE) fell 6.53 points (0.21%) through the session to 3,148.02. Meanwhile, the Indian Nifty 50 (₹NSEI) moved against momentum rising 48.85 points (0.22%) to 22,104.05.
Commodities
WTI crude rebound after a performance on Friday, rising 1.27% to $79.25 per barrel as of 21:00 GMT. The same couldn’t be said for precious metals as Gold prices had fallen 1.32% to $2,343.60 per ounce as of 21:00 GMT.
