Daily Digest: Monday 20th May

USA
US equity performances were mixed as traders moved into a new week, the Nasdaq 100 ($NDX) led session gains rising 127.96 points (0.69%) to 18,674.19, while the S&P 500 ($SPX) rose 4.86 points (0.09%) to 5,308.13. The Dow was the only of the three indexes followed to move lower, as prices fell 196.82 points (0.49%) as the index broke below last weeks record closing level of 40,003.59 to 39,806.77.

Europe
London listed equity movements were minimal through Monday’s session with the FTSE 100 (FTSE) moving marginally higher to 8,424.20. This marked a 3.94 point (0.047%) session gain as 47 constituents closed higher, 2 were non-movers, and 51 closed lower. The Pan-European STOXX 600 (€SXXP) rose 0.95 points (0.18%) to 523.89, while the French CAC (€FCHI) rose 28.47 points (0.35%) to 8,195.97, and the German DAX (€GDAXI) rose 64.54 points (0.35%) to 18,786.96.

Rest of the World
Despite experiencing sell-offs through Friday, the Nikkei 225 (¥N225) managed to regain some of last weeks upside momentum rising 282.3 points (0.73%) higher to 39,069.68. In terms of FX, upside equity were supported by a depreciation of the JPY as the currency moved to 156.28 against the USD as of 21:28 GMT. As previously noted, any depreciation of the domestic currency makes the environment for foreign capital inflows more accommodative as domestic assets trade at relative discounts to their foreign counterparts.

The Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index (¥SSE) has continued to extend last week gains, rising a further 17.12 points (0.54%) to 3,171.14, while the Indian Nifty 50 (₹NSEI) also experienced an extension of last weeks trend rising 98.15 points (0.44%) to 22,502.

Commodities
WTI prices experienced a move to the downside, falling 0.41% to $79.73 per barrel. Monday’s moves broke the key psychological $80 level despite concerns over the geopolitical impacts of the Iranian president’s death on Sunday.

Gold prices had moved slightly higher as of 21:10 GMT, rising 0.5709% to 2,431.20 per ounce.
